Demystifying manifestation: what is manifesting really about?

Written by:

Have you ever heard someone say they “manifested their dream job,” a million dollars, or their soulmate and wondered “what the heck does that actually mean??”

Like, did they Jedi mind-bend it into their lives? Did they sit and meditate and then tripped over their manifestation next time they set foot out the door?

The concept of manifestation can be confusing, partially because it sounds like something near-magical. Like it’s a shortcut to getting what we want without actually putting any effort in — like we can be special for achieving something most people can’t.

And well, let’s be honest, these things do sound very enticing.

But the truth is a lot more common-sense than you might expect — though the outcome you get from manifestation is no less exciting.

Let’s dive into what manifestation is actually about and find out.

The two pillars of manifestation

Many books and Tiktok videos make manifestation seem like it’s purely about vibrations and energy. “Write this 55 times per day and your dreams will come true.”

Or “do this manifestation and your crush will text you.”

It makes you dream of unlocking supernatural powers in your mind where you can get what you want without actually doing anything.

The trouble is, we live in the 3D world, where there are certain laws in place. Such as the law of action, and the law of cause and effect.

For example, take weeds. You can write “I don’t have any weeds” or meditate as much as you want, but unless you go outside and pull out those darn weeds… you’re still gonna have weeds!

Of course, in order to take the necessary action, you do need to have the right mindset. Nobody does anything if they believe it’s not possible, or are trapped by fear of messing up, or sabotage their efforts because deep down they feel unworthy.

So manifestation stands on two fundamental pillars:

  1. A Powerful Mindset: A strong, positive mindset is necessary to believe in yourself and your vision. It’s cultivating faith, confidence, and clarity about what you want to create in your life. This involves practices like visualization, affirmations, clearing limiting beliefs, and managing your thoughts and emotions.
  2. Aligned Action: Aligned action is *necessary* to bring your vision out of your mind and into reality. This is where you take consistent, purposeful steps that move closer to your goals.

Manifestation in practice

When someone says they “manifested” something, it often sounds like they found some magical shortcut that airlifted their goals into their life.

But likely, there was a lot of mundane, practical, very common-sense stuff happening behind the scenes.

I don’t mean to take all the “magic” out of manifestation – far from it. It’s a beautiful concept, and I wouldn’t be writing this blog if I didn’t believe it worked.

We just need to consider the “boring, practical” stuff along with the “inspiring, woo” stuff.

Let’s say someone manifested their dream job. Their process might have looked something like this:

  1. They got clear on exactly what their dream job looked like (mindset)
  2. They started believing it was possible for them, with visualization, affirmations, and clearing limiting beliefs (mindset)
  3. They updated their resume and LinkedIn profile (action)
  4. They reached out to people in their network (action)
  5. They worked on their qualifications and skills with online courses, YouTube videos, podcasts, etc. (action)
  6. They got an intuitive idea to reach out to an old classmate from high school who recently moved to their city (intuition – help from the universe)
  7. Turns out, this classmate lives next door to the hiring manager of a company that would be a perfect fit!
  8. They practiced interviewing skills and researched tips to make a great impression (action)
  9. They did the interview, but didn’t pass (setback – test from the universe)
  10. They wrote to the hiring manager and persuaded him to give them a chance, and finally got hired

This is just an example — but it’s a common scenario. As you can see, it’s not always easy. There are periods where it feels like you aren’t making any progress, and setbacks that might make you want to give up.

The one thing that will ensure you manifest is that you don’t stop. You stay strong with your mindset, consistent with your actions, and open to any intuitions and ideas the universe sends your way.

Manifestation made simple

At its core, manifestation is a co-creative process between your inner world and your outer reality.

To sum it up briefly:

  1. Get crystal clear on what you want
  2. Cultivate the feeling that it’s possible
  3. Take aligned action to bring it into reality
  4. Stay open to intuition — guidance from the universe
  5. Keep going through any setbacks and challenges

Even if it’s not all magical like social media can make it seem, there are still moments that will feel that way.

And they wouldn’t be possible without the practical steps in between.
