3 Signs you’re stuck in the “how” (and how to break out of it)

Part of what makes humans so special is our very well developed logical mind.

Unfortunately, that logical mind can also get in our way โ€” especially with manifestation.

Because it’s always looking for a way to get things done. And sometimes, it can conjure up a very specific image for how it might come about.

Now, it’s great that your mind is thinking of ideas for how to take action on what you want. The problem is when it starts to cling to one specific idea.

Why is getting stuck in the “how” a problem?

Because it gives you tunnel vision. There might be an even better way to get what you want, staring you right in the face… but you don’t see it because you’re so hyper-focused on this one specific way your mind thought of.

And what’s more, you’re actually blocking the manifestation because you’re trying to forcefully orchestrate another way for it to happen.

For example, say you want to get a date with someone, and imagine running into them at the gym, them complimenting you on how fit you are, and then asking you out.

First of all, this will inevitably disappoint you as you’re expecting them to follow a script that they never received โ€” so they’ll inevitably stray from it, leaving you frustrated and acting unnatural trying to steer the interaction “back on track”.

Maybe they were going to ask you out, just in a different way, but you forced the conversation away from that. Or maybe letting the conversation flow freely would have made you realize they’re not the person for you after all.

This is a very specific example, but it goes for any situation โ€” getting your dream job, getting a promotion at work, making a new friend, etc.

I’ve found myself trying to micro-manage my manifestations before, and it has ALWAYS left me disappointed.

If you like to daydream about your goals coming true, go for it โ€” but remind yourself it’s just a fantasy, and don’t dwell on it too much. You need to stay open to the possibility of things going in a thousand possible other directions.

3 signs you’re stuck in the “how”

Here are some signs youโ€™re stuck in the how, and reasons why they make it harder: 

1. Youโ€™re planning out specific situations in your mind

Like the example I described above, your mind might be scripting specific interactions in your mind:

  • Running into someone in a specific place or way
  • What they will say
  • How they’ll react to something you say

Your mind might even do this right before an interaction โ€” “Oh I see him there, now I will walk by and he will look up and see me and walk after me and tap me on the shoulder and…”

Could this be a way to manifest what you want?

Sure! But then it will come from your intuition not your racing mind.(I’ll get more into this below).

2. You’re worried about saying or doing “the perfect thing”

The perfect thing is a made-up construct โ€” as if there’s “one correct way” for things to happen.

And if you don’t get it right, then you’ve messed it all up.

As if there aren’t a bazillion different ways something can happen

This kind of worrying might sound like this: โ€œOh no did that sound weird? I shouldnโ€™t have said thatโ€ฆ theyโ€™re looking at me funny, oh god I messed everything up.โ€

Which is an excellent way to overthink and drive yourself insane and a terrible way to relax, be authentic, and let intuition guide you.

3. You feel like youโ€™re behind or off track

Feeling behind or off track implies that there is a specific deadline or timing that things have to happen by.

Which is again, trying to force your manifestation process into a very specifically shaped box.

But the thing is, how do you know thatโ€™s the best timeline?

Maybe it needs to take longer because you need to learn an important lesson first, which is key to you being able to maintain your manifestation after you get it.

And maybe itโ€™s taking so long because the universe is waiting for you to learn this lesson before it gives you the next idea or nudge for whatโ€™s next. 

How do you get un-stuck from the how?

When you next recognize one of the signs above, hereโ€™s what you should try:

1. Get more into your body

Overthinking and clinging to the “how” is a product of logic โ€” it happens in the mind.

But listening to your intuition is a product of the soul โ€” it happens when you relax and observe.

To get yourself into this receptive state, feel more into your body. What sensations do you feel? Where? Feel your breath coming in and out. Feel the ground underneath your feet. Feel the temperature in the room, the breeze on your face. Feel any energy you have around the solar plexus or gut.

2. Imagine a benevolent higher power

There are inevitably many things out of your control โ€” many, MANY things.

(Which is why clinging to a specific how is pretty useless).

If you try to control all these external factors, you’re just going to make yourself extremely stressed and unhappy.

So here’s a better way โ€” imagine yourself handing off what you can’t control to a benevolent higher power.

Picture yourself setting your manifestation, and then hanging off the situation to this higher power, and telling it, “I trust you’ll arrange what’s for my highest good.”

This is not only very good for your emotional well-being, but it also lets you see the good in situations you may not have considered before.

I’m sure you’ve had an experience already that at first seemed upsetting, but later turned out to be great for one reason or another.

So no matter what happens, imagine that it’s what will eventually lead to your manifestation coming true in the best way possible.

3. Focus on enjoying the moment

Clinging to the “how” not only blocks your intuition, but it also makes you stressed and not really present in the moment.

When you lie in bed and look back on the day, you’ll barely even remember, because you were up in your head, worrying about this possibility and that possibility.

What’s the point of manifesting something if it makes you live life like this? That’s no way to live.

Turn your focus on enjoying the moment. Live fully, so that you can create memories you can look back on and savor.

4. Listen to your intuition

Finally, and most importantly for having your manifestations come true, LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION.

The three tips above will put you in an optimal state to do just that.

Stay open to receiving guidance, however it normally comes to you.

For me, itโ€™s a kind of โ€œurgeโ€ to do something. For you, it may be a feeling in your gut, an image that flashes through your mind, etc.

Youโ€™ll get better at noticing these messages as you practice โ€” but youโ€™ve got to stop the overthinking and scheming โ€œhow will this happenโ€ in order to hear your intuition.
